Character Name; Natsuhi Ushiromiya

Canon Point; Episode 5, immediately before being put on trial
Age; 47
House; Freya
Power; Charm
Personality; The first impression you would usually get of Ushiromiya Natsuhi is that of a dignified, slightly strict woman just into middle age. While polite in her speech as a general rule, she tends to be frank about her opinions of others. One example of this is when Gohda, the chef she hired, thanks her for choosing him, and she says that she simply choose him because he was the best qualified applicant. She doesn't hesitate to point out the mistakes of others, particular the servants who work under her and her daughter, Jessica. But when praise is deserved, she gives it unstintingly.
Her core motivation is her devotion to her beloved husband, Krauss, and daughter, Jessica, and the honor and status of the Ushiromiya head family itself. The depths of this devotion can bring out both the best and the worst in her. Because of the twelve years it took from the time she married to Krauss until she had Jessica, she has deep-rooted insecurities about her ability to carry out her duties as the wife of the successor to the Ushiromiya family. This causes her to easily be provoked by Krauss' sister, Eva, particularly since the ranking system the Ushiromiya family uses puts Eva, descendent by blood from Kinzo, as being higher ranked than Natsuhi, who married into the family. She also is particularly nervous during the yearly family conferences and tends to come down harshly on the servants for even the slightest mistake that might reflect badly on the Ushiromiya head family during this time. It also caused her to be incredibly hurt when she finds out that Krauss knew the legend of the gold was true but always lead her to believe it was false along with everyone else, because it made her feel like Krauss didn't trust her to help and support him.
But if she feels like her efforts needed and/or appreciated, her devotion to her family can give her great strength. While it was merely a delusion created by her own mind, when Kinzo, a man she had long respected and wished to have the trust of, told her that while she didn't have the qualifications to wear the One-winged Eagle on her clothes, her devotion to protecting the glory of the Ushiromiya family made her worthy of carrying the One-winged Eagle engraved upon her heart, it gave her the confidence to brush off Eva's usual taunts and take the lead when the first deaths in the First game were discovered. In the Fifth game, she wouldn't place the blame for the crimes on her husband or Kinzo, even to save herself from being falsely accused of being the culprit, which resulted in her being violent assaulted by Eva and her own reputation being dragged through the mud.
While she does her best to do what she thinks her duty is, fulfilling duty alone is not something that can satisfy her. She was initially bitter about her forced marriage to Krauss, only warming to him and finding doing her duties by him as a wife personally important once they found love together. And had she been capable of following duty strictly with no concern for her own emotions, she would have been able to raise the child Kinzo gave her, perhaps not happily, but ably, instead of accidentally causing its death because she couldn't love such a painful reminder of her failures as a wife.
She can go overboard in her caring for those she loves as well. She gets verbally defensive and overemotional when her husband or Kinzo are insulted, even if she's aware that there's some truth to the accusations. And her desire to protect her daughter at any cost lead to her ejecting Genji, Kumasawa, Nanjo, and even Maria from Kinzo's study, the safest place in the mansion, when the mysterious appearance of a letter lead her to believe that at least one of them was in league with the culprit. It didn't matter to her that some of them were likely innocent, as long as all threats to her daughter's safety were eliminated. She even said herself that she would become a demon if that was what it took to keep Jessica safe.
When not overtaken by her emotions, however, she can be a very good planner. Episode 5 shows her putting together the plot to hide Kinzo's death, and the meticulous preparations she made to make it seem like Kinzo was present and walking around during the 1985 conference. As well, when forced to go to a certain place at a certain time during Episode 5 by the man from 19 years ago, she deliberate put on an act of being annoyed to give herself a reason to leave the rest of the relatives.
Samples;
Log Sample; Even though the walk from the stairs to the parlor was a short one, Natsuhi couldn't keep her thoughts from whirling through her mind as she made the journey under Erika's watchful, suspicious eyes. Ever since the man from 19 years ago had first called her, things had started to go horribly wrong. Her beloved daughter Jessica had been murdered, and her husband's life depended on her following that man's orders...!
And because she had no alibi, she was suspected of the first set of six murders, and Hideyoshi's as well, even though she was innocent... All because she'd followed what the man from 19 years ago had told her to do. Was it all a set-up, revenge on her for causing that terrible accident 19 years ago...? The one she felt so terrible about she'd tried to block it entirely from her memory?
If it was revenge on her that he wanted, why couldn't he have inflicted it only on her? Jessica shouldn't have died and Krauss shouldn't have to suffer for something that was her sin alone. It didn't matter what suffering they inflicted on her, as long as they left her loved ones alone...!
Reaching the doors to the parlor, Natsuhi shook away her thoughts. They wouldn't help her now. Taking a deep calming breath, she pushed open the doors to the parlor, ready to face what waited for her there with the dignity of a head of the Ushiromiya family.
